The road in rye. 1881
Oil on canvas. 65 x 145 cm
State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow
The rye field in the picture was filled with heavy gold. The field is cut by a road going into the distant horizon. The road is unthinkable without a traveler. Judging by the clothes, the road for this man is a way of life. The author hid the traveler's face from the public, thereby generalizing his image. There is no road without a traveler, just as there is no traveler without a road.
The endless evening sky hung over the field. The viewer's gaze is directed by the artist to where the sky meets the earth. The unattainable distance from where clouds appear is the goal of the traveler.
The meticulousness and accuracy of the artist in the image of each spikelet, each blade of grass on the road surprises and delights.
The dark gold and rich green colors of the lower, earthy part of the painting are harmoniously complemented by an ensemble of white, pink and blue sky colors.
The evening atmosphere of the painting is filled with sadness. The reason for this is the traveler's stooped back. His whole posture - doomed, sullen - creates a feeling of hopelessness. It's amazing how one detail can give the whole work a special meaning.
