"The children of Jacob sell their brother Joseph", 1855
234 x 306
Jacob especially loved his son Joseph for his kindness and simplicity. The brothers were jealous of him and decided to sell Joseph to Egypt. They showed the young man's bloody clothes to his father and said that wild animals had torn him apart.
K. D. Flavitsky studied at the Academy of Fine Arts with F. A. Bruni. The biblical plot was assigned for the picture by the Council of the Academy of Arts. In April 1855, the artist began working on the work. One of the graphic sketches is kept in the Tretyakov Gallery. The painting is designed in the classical canons of academic art. The artist's works of the time of training have not been preserved, and this one is all the more interesting as an example of his work of the early period. The canvas was highly appreciated by the Academic Council. Flavitsky was awarded a Large gold medal, which gave the right to a pensioner's trip abroad.
