"The Wave", 1889
Oil on canvas 304×505
The State Russian Museum
The grandiose canvas "Wave" is a vivid example of Aivazovsky's late work. It is curious that at the time of the creation of the painting, the artist was already 72 years old. Depicting the violent movement of the waves, the painter admires the cyclopean power of nature and seems to compare the futility of human efforts with it: heavy leaden clouds hang low over the waves, the abyss is about to swallow the wrecked ship, there is no hope for the sailors trying to escape. The color of the picture is cold and gloomy. The painter departs here from the early romantic brightness of the palette and approaches a realistic solution.
