"Ships on the roadstead", 1851
Oil on canvas 71×89
Feodosia Art Gallery named after I. K. Aivazovsky
The picture was painted in two stages. But at least two years have passed between each of them. At the first stage, work was carried out on the right rocks, and the ship that adjoins them. At the same time, the images were output manually, and after that, they were slightly smeared with a small brush that had a special diameter of 0.3 millimeters. It was made of soft hair, and was cut off obliquely so that a long, lingering trace remained.
The second stage, the left part of the picture already considers, including the sea, along with the sky. It was written only in soft, pastel colors. Easily drying shades were chosen, since it was impossible to varnish the work on top. The varnish would have taken away half the brightness of the final work, so that no one would have been able to see the full brightness of the canvas already deprived of colors.
At the same time, the image of the sun was executed for a very long time. It had to be depicted brighter than the rest of the picture, which means that the entire canvas had to be sustained in one color scheme.
PLOT
The picture depicts how two ships decided to stand at night near an unknown island, having raised the nets in advance so that none of the aborigines could climb to their ship. As soon as dawn begins, the ship already comes to life, raising the first sails. Just a little more, and it will go further on the road.
