"The Siege of Sevastopol", 1859
Oil on canvas 32.5×72
Feodosia Art Gallery named after I. K. Aivazovsky
In 1859, the epic canvas "The Siege of Sevastopol" appeared, in which Aivazovsky captured a panorama of the defending city - from the Northern side to the Chersonesos lighthouse - and the masts of submerged ships at the exit to the Sevastopol raid.
The picture was painted by Aivazovsky under the impression of a trip to the besieged city in the autumn of 1854. Arriving in Sevastopol, the artist did not see the ships in the bay, which he had painted more than once before with such love. Only the tops of their masts rose above the water. To prevent enemy ships from approaching the city from the sea, the first sailing ships were flooded at the entrance to the bay, on the beam of the Konstantinovskaya and Alexandrovskaya batteries, by the decision of the command.
A warm autumn evening. The blue of the sky is reflected in the calm waters of the bay. But the idyll of nature is disturbed by the confrontation between the coastal batteries and the ships of the allied fleet standing in the distance on the roadstead. Above the city, which stretches on the opposite shore, the skies are foggy from the swirling powder smoke of numerous explosions. The city buildings on the Central Hill, illuminated by the evening sun, were painted by the artist with almost jewelry precision. The forts on the banks are clearly visible, the Ship's settlement is distinguishable. Thanks to the panoramic composition, you can understand how fragile the life of the city is, bordering on the one hand with the boundless sea, and on the other-with the endless mountain ranges. On the northern side, in the foreground, the artist depicted a group of captured French soldiers, guarded by a convoy of Cossacks.
The war left heavy feelings in Aivazovsky's soul. During the fighting, the artist's comrades, with whom he had been familiar since the time of the naval campaign to the shores of the Caucasus in 1839, were killed-Vice Admiral V. A. Kornilov, the chief of staff of the Black Sea Fleet, and Vice Admiral P. S. Nakhimov, the squadron commander. The Russian troops had to leave the city.
