One of the early works of the young artist was the painting "Yalta", painted in 1838, it depicts a small seaside town from the sea.
Against the background of the sky, on the top of the Polikurovsky hill rising above the sea, the tall slender bell tower of the Church of St. John Chrysostom stands out, the first stone structure of the city, erected under the direction of architect K. Eshliman according to the project of G. Torricelli. Its height above sea level was 45 meters. The church was built in 1837 and consecrated in the same year, on September 16. The next day, the yacht "Polar Star" moored to the newly built pier, on board of which Nicholas I and his family arrived in Yalta. The Emperor was fascinated by the view from the cathedral. On March 23, 1838, the tsar signed an order granting Yalta the status of a county town.
The painting does not have a specific plot and a carefully thought-out composition, but for that time the canvas became unusual and even innovative. Everything is in motion – the waves playing out near the shore, sailing schooners at sea, the rays of the setting sun illuminating moving clouds and city buildings on a coastal hill, people watching a longboat landing on the shore, struggling with the onslaught of waves.
Aivazovsky himself admitted that while drawing, he studied atmospheric changes, observed the play of light and shadow on sea waves, mountain peaks, trees. In terms of color scheme and compositional structure, the canvas resembles the works of Sylvester Shchedrin, whose painting had a great influence on the early work of the future famous marine artist. The color of the picture is enlivened by the bright spots of the clothes of the people depicted in the foreground.
It is noteworthy that the first owner of the painting, painted by the young Aivazovsky, was His Serene Highness Prince Field Marshal M. S. Vorontsov.
