I. K. Aivazovsky, who was sent to the Crimea by the Academy of Arts in his youth to improve his skills, works a lot, drawing seaside cities. In the same period, in 1839, the canvas "Kerch" appeared.
One of the most ancient cities in the world, once called Pantikapei and the Bosphorus, is located in the eastern part of the Crimea on the shore of the Kerch Strait, at the foot and on the slopes of the mountain named after the Bosporan king Mithridates I the Great. Once on Mount Mithridates, which was the Acropolis of Panticapaeum, there were majestic temples and royal palaces with beautiful statues and colonnades. In Tauris, there were many legends about the mountain, telling about the untold treasures of the powerful king.
Aivazovsky depicts a north-eastern panorama of the city and the city hill with buildings running up on it, a raid with many ships and boats gliding on the waves under the rays of the sun, people on the shore in the foreground on the other side of the bay.
In the 1830s and 40s, buildings in the classical style and new embankments appeared in Kerch. The undisputed decoration of Mount Mithridates was the building of the Museum of Antiquities, built in 1835 according to Torricelli's project in the form of a Doric peripterum - the temple of Theseus in Athens, to which there was a stone Empire staircase. Later it will be transformed into a church consecrated in the name of Alexander Nevsky, and then - Metropolitan Peter of Moscow. On the very top of the hill there is a chapel erected in the mid-1830s over the grave of the Kerch mayor, archaeologist and discoverer of the ancient Pantikapei I. A. Stempkovsky, who wished to rest next to the excavations to which he devoted his life. Below, among the buildings of the city, is the ancient Greek St. John the Baptist Church.
